As those who frequent our social networks already know, during the 87th monthly Assembly of Superiors General, which took place at the end of last May, Fr Saverio Cannistrà, our Superior General, gave a conference with the title: What are we referring to when we speak of the prophecy of consecrated life?  During the conference Fr Saverio called for a deepening of theological reflection on our religious identity, the only way to advance in effective leadership.

Doing a “bit of everything”, continued Fr Saverior, is neither prophetic nor sustainable and borders on “maintenance strategies”, leading only to undesirable situations. Besides enthusiasm, stated Fr General, we need logical coherence, implementing a training strategy that allows religious “to question themselves about the meaning of their vocation, to make a serious discernment and to take concrete life decisions”.

From June 6 to 11, 2016, there took place the fifth meeting of the Definitory in this sexennium. At the end of the meeting, as is customary, our Major Superiors sent a letter in which we are told of what happened in their meeting:

A date of particular note was the last day, 11th of June, in which took place the half-yearly meeting with the General Council of the Carmelite Order, presided over by its Prior General Fr Fernando Millán. Before the meeting, our Definitors and the OCarm General Councillors, led by their respective superiors, made a pilgrimage to the Holy Door of St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

On 11th June 2016, the Prior General of the Order of Carmel, Fr Fernando Millán and our Father General, Fr Saverio Cannistrà, sent a joint letter to the whole family of Carmel. Its title is inspired by a quotation from Holy Mother Teresa: “May God be blessed forever, he who waited for me so long”(Life, prologue).

The letter wishes to be a help in living out this jubilee year of mercy from a Carmelite point of view, encouraging us to look to our saints in order to recreate their experience of merciful love.
