Topicality of St John of the Cross

In addition to the International Congress held at the Teresianum, which we reported this month in our news service, there are some events that highlight the pertinence of Saint John of the Cross and the interest in his works nowadays.

In Murcia recently, from the 21st to the 23rd of May, some days were spent in interdisciplinary study on the saint, with two conferences given by Frs José Vicente Rodríguez (professor at the CITeS-University of mysticism) and Emilio Martínez (professor at the Teresianum). In addition, the occasion was used to reflect upon the influence of John of the Cross on art: music, painting, sculpture and cinema. The conference was organized by the Theological Institute of the “Saint Fulgentius” seminary of the Diocese of Cartagena, the Discalced Carmelite friars of Caravaca and the Discalced Carmelite nuns of Algezares. It is hoped that, taking into account the success of the meeting, a specific chair for Studies on St John of the Cross can be founded in this institute.

As for written publications, two interesting books have recently seen the light: a biography written by Fr. Bruno Moriconi in Italian, published by Edizioni OCD with the title “Il Prigionero di Toledo. Juan de la Cruz, poeta di Dio” [The prisoner of Toledo. John of the Cross, poet of God] and a commentary on the “Spiritual Canticle“, a posthumous work by Fr. Eulogio Pacho, edited by Fr. Ciro García in the Editorial Monte Carmelo of the Fonte group, of the Iberian Province.

Finally, let us not forget the awaited International Congress ─already the third in the series dedicated to Saint John of the Cross─ to be held in the CITeS-University of mysticism in Avila from the 2nd to the 8th of September next. As usual, you can participate in the Congress in person or by means of the internet. For information on the program and registration, we invite you all to visit the website: www.mistica.es.
