PERU: FR. ANGEL ZAPATA BANCES OCD NOMINATED AS BISHOP OF CHIMBOTE

The Holy Father nominated our brother Fr. Angel Zapata Bances OCD as Bishop of Chimbote, Peru, on 18 May 2022.

Fr. Angel was born in Lima, 3 August 1959.  He entered the Carmelite Order in March 1979, making his First Profession 14 March 1982 and his Solemn Profession in Rome in 1986. He was ordained a priest in the Parish of St. James the Apostle in Lima 22 March 1987.

He studied theology at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in the Teresianum from 1984 until 1987 and later, from 1993 to 1997, studied for his Bachelor in Theology and Licence, also at the Teresianum.

Fr. Angel was engaged in the following official roles at different times: Formation (1986-1999 in Peru and Rome); Vicar Parish Priest and Parish Priest (1997-2008 in Peru); Regional Vicar and Commissar in Peru (1999-2005; 2008-2016); Councillor of the Vicariate (2005-2007). From 2018 he was Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s Carmelite Parish in Lima and since 1917 was also Superior of that Carmelite Community.
